If you are applying to one of our Pathway programmes at the University of Roehampton, you will need to send us a ‘Personal Statement’ as part of your application. This is a letter from you to us about why you want to study the course. It is your opportunity to introduce yourself to the university.
If you are not sure what to include in your personal statement, don’t worry! It is probably the first time you will have had to write a personal statement, and it doesn’t have to be poetry.
Here is what we’d like to see in your personal statement when you apply for one of our Pathway programmes at the University of Roehampton.
1. Why you want to study the course
It is a basic thing, but we would really like to know why you want to study the course and what you think you’ll get out of it. This will let us know that you fully understand what your time at Roehampton will consist of. Make sure you include elements like which modules you are most interested in and how you think the degree will improve your life or future career.
Importantly, this will let us know you have applied for the right course and that you will be happy when studying with us.
2. How prepared you are for the course
Once you’ve communicated how the course will benefit you, it is time to tell us how you are prepared to succeed on the programme you have chosen.
This might include relevant qualifications, previous studies and work experience. If the course is in a field you haven’t studied or worked in before, then explaining how the skills you already have would help you succeed in this course would be useful, too.
This section is important because we want all our students to succeed, and part of that is having the relevant experience and knowledge to study the course.
3. Why you have chosen Roehampton
We are delighted you have chosen to study at the University of Roehampton, but we would like to hear about why you think it is suited to your needs. This is a special place and we want all our students to have a great time while studying with us.
This section could include things like:
- Why you like the idea of a campus university
- What facilities you plan to use
- What sports, clubs or societies you are interested in
- How you would like to contribute to student life at Roehampton
- Why you will like living in London
- Why you will like living in the UK
4. What you intend to do after completing the course
Whether you are planning further study after you finish, or if you want to get a job in the UK – or in your home country – tell us what you plan to do after graduation. This will help us make sure the course you have chosen is the best decision for you.
If you want to further your education, we can give you the relevant information about courses available at the University of Roehampton. With this information, you will have a clear view of the next years of your life, all the way through from your Pathway programme to your Bachelors or Masters.
If you want to work afterwards, tell us how the course will benefit your career. If you want to get into a specific career, we can make sure that the course you have chosen is the most appropriate one. We can also give you relevant information on the university’s connections within your chosen industry and we may be able to help find a job.
Now you know what to include in your personal statement, get writing! If you need any more help, please get in touch with our advisors.
