Response to COVID-19

Response to Covid-19: Our focus is on providing a safe and welcoming learning environment for our students. We have taken every measure, in line with Government guidance, to ensure continued access to learning.

As part of our response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, we are planning to deliver this course through a mix of live online classes and face-to-face learning opportunities at our London Holborn, Birmingham and Manchester Centres.

We continue to follow Government guidance and any social distancing measures that may be in place. As restrictions ease, face-to-face opportunities will be increased where appropriate and it is safe for us to do so. Course Summary

For many organisations, digital transformation has always been a primary priority, and Covid-19 has only expanded this need. The following are the primary issues that today’s enterprises face:

  • How to use digital technologies to transform their current business model?
  • How should they interact with those technologies and attract new customers?
  • How to digitally/virtually manage a dislocated workforce?

This BA (Hons) Business Management programme is designed to equip you with the necessary skills to address these issues.

Blended working is now a permanent feature for many businesses globally and the experience you will gain by studying through a blended learning model will help you prepare for this, building your confidence ready for success in the digital workplace.

The number of live contact hours that you have with your lecturers remains the same

  • You will have timetabled sessions delivered face-to-face on-campus, building relationships and engaging with your student community
  • You will have timetabled live online sessions that will allow you to participate and ask questions throughout the session
  • Support services can be accessed remotely and your campus is open so you can book in and use campus facilities and services face-to-face at a time that works for you, either on your timetabled on-campus days or outside these times

Our blended approach offers the best of both live online and on-campus learning opportunities, and your blended timetables will typically follow one of the below:

Daytime students

If you are a daytime student, you will typically have 2 days of tuition per week – your sessions will be on-campus for 1 of those days and the other day will take place live online.

Evening and weekend students

Evening and weekend blended timetables will typically follow one of the below patterns each week:

  • 2 evenings live online and 1 weekend day face-to-face on-campus, or
  • 2 evenings face-to-face on-campus and 1 weekend day live online

This BA (Hons) Business Management will not only provide you with a thorough understanding of business and management, but it will also help you build the skills and knowledge required in the context of digital business and digital transformation.

For example, whereas a Business and Management degree would focus on management theory, this degree will apply it to the management and motivation of virtual teams.

You will also learn how to identify and manage digital transformation projects, as well as the impact of digital technology on how companies engage with their consumers and supply chains.

Additionally, you will get access to an optional module called “Preparing for Employment,” which will teach you how to:

  • Will favourably communicate your business readiness in a CV, LinkedIn profile, and during the hiring process.
  • Conduct a reflective skills audit to determine the abilities required in a given business sector of your choice.

This course is ideal for students who want to:

  • learn how to do business in a digital environment
  • acquire the necessary skillset and knowledge to become a key player of the digital revolution
  • experience the benefit of both live online and on-campus learning
  • learn in a personalised and friendly small class environment

A Blended Learning Method

This degree is designed to encourage you to think digitally as well as plan and run businesses virtually. Therefore, the programme itself is to be delivered in blended mode (which means that up to 50% out of the classroom will be delivered digitally).

The combination of face-to-face, distance learning and blended learning interactions all rely on an active learning approach. Your degree will be “brought to life” via online activities, innovative exercises, case material, group/collaborative working and the use of formative tasks and feedback.

  • You will be taught highly relevant and contemporary content through lectures, tutorials, and seminars, totalling 12 hours per week 
  • You will have a module specifically designed to cover learning and working digitally and you will put this into practice by working in virtual teams for other modules
  • You are expected to study independently 38 hours per week outside of contact hours
  • Assessed through a combination of coursework and presentations: including blogs, reports, presentations, annotated CVs, projects, conference papers, academic poster, research proposal and a dissertation.
  • Benefit from being taught by a highly qualified faculty, experienced in delivering undergraduate programmes
  • Class sizes are relatively small, providing a personalised and friendly learning environment

All modules are core and worth 20 credits, unless otherwise stated.

Learning and Working in a Digital World

This module explores how to learn and work effectively in a digital context.  Concretely, you will learn how to study in a digital environment and develop your work ready skills through the use of online systems and through working in and managing digital teams.

The skills you will acquire through this module will also be useful to successfully complete other modules of this bachelor.

The Digital Business Environment

This module will serve as a general introduction to the business environment. Additionally, it will also introduce you to the ongoing impact of digital technologies on how businesses are structured and operate. As part of this, it considers traditional business models and how these have been challenged and have evolved in response to digital developments.

Finance and Accounting for Managers

Working as a manager in a business, virtually, increasingly requires employees and managers to:

  • be financially aware
  • have the ability to interpret financial data
  • construct budgets

This module provides this underpinning knowledge and understanding. Indeed, it covers fundamental financial and management accounting concepts and their application in a range of business contexts.

Managing the Digital Organisation

This module is designed to provide an underpinning understanding of core management concepts and approaches.  Despite the growth of digital transformation, many fundamental concepts of management continue to have relevance to businesses. These are introduced and then explored to understand how the rise of digitalisation in organisations is changing management competencies and demands.

Techniques for Data-Driven Decision Making

Digital technology generates high volumes of data covering many aspects of a business and its operations.  This module will introduce you to the concept of data-driven decision-making.  Concretely, you will learn:

  • The importance of data management and security
  • The principles of data presentation and its business use

As part of the module, you also be introduced to the data handling capabilities of Excel and its range of descriptive and inferential statistical techniques.  There will be a focus on the business use and application of these statistics. You will particularly learn the value and insight that can be drawn from them rather than the underpinning statistical theory.

Marketing in the Digital World

This module begins by introducing you to a range of fundamental marketing concepts and models. It then moves on to explore how developments in technology:

  • have challenged these concepts and models
  • have led to the development of new approaches to marketing driven by the use of digital technologies.

Project Management in a Digital Environment

Using contemporary project management theory and practice, you will explore the process of making and implementing digital choices.

This will begin with the process of project appraisal; where you will learn how to work through to project implementation and post implementation review.  You will put the theory into practice. Every week, you will complete a simulation of a digital implementation project. You will have to work in teams and apply what you learn to drive the project through to completion.

Creating and Managing Digital Operations and Supply

This module will provide you with an underpinning understanding of operations and supply chain management. You will also explore the benefits and challenges of:

  • The increased use of digital technology in these fields.
  • Adopting these technologies

 

Finally, this module will also explore their impact from a range of stakeholder perspectives, (including suppliers and customers perspectives and more broadly, the society’s perspective).

Managing Virtual

High speed, high capacity, reliable and secure digital communications have open up the possibility for greater home and remote working.  This module explores the challenges of setting up, managing and motivating effective virtual teams.  Amongst other areas, you will learn how to create a sense of corporate identity, belonging and team spirit.  It also explores the HR challenges related to remote working and how HR professionals are responding to these.

Big Data

This module will first introduce you to the concept of big data. Through case studies from a range of organisational contexts, you will explore the business insight and organisational advantage that has been gained through the use of Big data.  You will also learn how to analyse big data. The module gives you the opportunity to explore a ‘real’ big data set and you will extract business insights from this value.

Digital Expectations: Understanding the Inter-Generational Customer Context

Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials and Generation Z all have different values, aspirations and desires. They interact with digital technologies in different ways.  Today, organisations move more into the field of digital marketing and digital interaction with customers and potential customers. Therefore, understanding the behaviours and modes of engagement with technology of different generations becomes a critical factor driving business success.  This module explores these inter-generational differences. It will also explore their implications for organisational approaches to

  • develop digital engagement strategies
  • the digitisation of operations and service delivery

Cyber Security and Information Governance

The increased use of digital systems occurred together with the increase in the risk of unauthorised access to data and/or denial of service attacks. Nowadays, national and supra national legislation are now in place to control the storage and use of personal data. Consequently, organisations are significantly adding compliance requirements.

This module evaluates the nature of the cyber security threats faced by businesses. It also explores the process of developing and implementing an effective cyber security strategy.  The implications of GDPR on business activity and data management are explored as there is the need for an information management strategy.

Emerging Technologies: Business Opportunities and Challenges

This module will introduce you to emerging technologies and approaches. It will act as a platform to highlight the business challenges and opportunities they bring.  You will explore a maximum of three emergent and modern technologies to illustrate the theory.

Strategy Formulation in a Digital Context

This module will stimulate your critical understanding of a range of approaches to strategy formulation. You will explore how rapid digital development and implementation challenging traditional strategic models and approaches to strategy development. The module also focuses on the development of an organisation’s digital strategy. Indeed, you will explore the creation of an agile development process, which can address to the challenges created by digital technologies.

Business Ethics in a Digital Context

On an ethical perspective, digital technologies pose a challenge to current ethical business norms. Generally, they are fitting poorly into existing frameworks of corporate responsibility and governance.  This module examines and then evaluates core concepts in business ethics. You will be questioning the adequacy of existing protocols in the digital age and whether new approaches and guidance needs to be developed. Possible new models are explored and discussed.

Research Methods

This module introduces you to the process of carrying out academic research.  It will make you understand the process of:

  • identifying a research topic,
  • defining appropriate objectives and questions through to construction of a literature review.
  • developing appropriate research methodologies for different forms of research.

During this module, you will produce a research proposal which will form the basis of their research-based dissertation.

Dissertation (40 credits)

You will be required to undertake an individual piece of original research based on the proposal you will write during the research methods module.  You will be able to approach your dissertation freely, within the constraint of relevance to digital business and business management.  You could, for instance, adopt the consultancy project approach: act as a consultant and advice a business on development of an effective digital strategy or the management of a digital implementation project.  Another example could be to undertake an analysis of data captured by digital systems to extract business insights and inform subsequent business activity.

Preparing for Employment (0 credit) (Optional)

The principal aim of the module is to introduce students to disciplines, skills and reflective practice to prepare them for employment and / or study in Higher Education and specifically to improve their employability skills.  Students will develop an understanding of the skills required for employment, assess issues relating to time management and employment planning, communicate your business readiness positively in your Curriculum Vitae (CV)create an impressive LinkedIn profile and identify and plan targets required for future employment and training goals.

In addition, students will be provided with the opportunity to conduct an audit of their current programme in order that they can identify how key components of the programme will help them in the chosen area/s of work.

The programme has been designed with the objective to meet the needs of employers. The aim is to develop your skills, behaviours and knowledge such that you can confidently either:

  • Pursue further study at a postgraduate level to improve your existing career prospects
  • Enter the business, leadership and management environment

As a graduate of this programme, you will find yourself in a position of strength in either the pursuit of further study of the graduate jobs market having gained a qualification with high currency in these challenging and digitally-focused times.

You will need to have access to a laptop/PC required and reliable high-speed internet connection for your virtual classes and group assignments

Please note that your tuition fees do not cover the cost of the following: subject books, stationery, printing and photocopying costs, accommodation, living expenses, travel, hobbies, sports or any other extracurricular activities.

You should be prepared to buy some of the course texts which are around £30 each. This would average around £180 per annum.

General entry requirements:

  •  96 UCAS points, or equivalent. (Missing UCAS points? You can apply for the four-year version of this programme)
  • GCSE Maths at grade C/4 or above, or equivalent. This can be exempted by successfully passing the QA Higher Education Maths test (score 8 out of 15).

English requirements:

  • GCSE English at grade C/4 or equivalent. Applicants can sit the QA Higher Education English test, where 60% is required.

Please note: We are not currently able to sponsor international students to study this programme at University of Roehampton Centres therefore if you require sponsorship to study as an International student, this course will be unavailable to you.
